As part of a number of exciting changes taking place at Porterhouse Medical, we have decided, for the first time ever, to adopt a company charity and fundraise for it over the course of the year! As such, we are very happy to announce that the charity we will be supporting in 2016 is the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service.

Alexander Devine is a local children’s charity that was set up in 2007 by Fiona and John Devine. Fiona and John realised that Berkshire urgently needed its own dedicated children’s hospice when their son Alexander sadly passed away of a brain tumour at only 8 years old. They established the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service with the aim of “providing a dedicated children’s hospice service for all children with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses in Berkshire and beyond.”

The Alexander Devine charity will offer both a dedicated hospice (once the new building has been completed) and in-home support by specialised nurses, who in 2014 alone provided end-of-life care for seven children. This care is vital to children and their families going through enormously difficult times.

The decision to support this charity has been met with great enthusiasm by the Porterhouse team. In February, we launched the Porterhouse tuck shop, which predominantly sells items to fuel our rampant chocolate and Coca-Cola addiction, and in April one of our medical writers will be burning off all the extra calories by running the Reading Half Marathon with the Alexander Devine team. We are looking forward to the other fundraising opportunities we have planned, including pub quizzes, car washes and, most importantly, bake sales!

We are extremely pleased and excited to be supporting the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service and we look forward to raising money for such a worthwhile cause.
